Visitors rarely give a museum label more than a few seconds, and curators know it. Yet the humble label is harder to write than it looks. It must identify the object, offer enough context to make it interesting, and do so in about fifty words, without condescending to specialists or baffling newcomers. Early labels were written by scholars for other scholars and read like entries in a catalogue: dates, materials, provenance. Reformers in the late twentieth century argued that this approach quietly excluded most of the public, and urged curators to tell a story instead. The pendulum has since swung back a little. Some critics complain that chatty labels tell visitors what to feel before they have looked, and a few museums now hang labels at a distance from the object so that the first encounter is unmediated. The compromise, increasingly, is layered information: a short headline for the hurried, a paragraph for the curious, and a digital archive for the devoted.
