For more than two centuries, the lighthouse keeper was a figure of quiet authority on Britain's coast. His duties went well beyond tending the lamp: he recorded the weather, logged passing vessels and, when a storm drove a ship onto the rocks, organised the first attempt at rescue. Yet the profession was never as romantic as the paintings suggest. Keepers on remote rock stations might spend weeks cut off by heavy seas, and a single illness could leave a small crew struggling to keep the light burning. Electric lamps, introduced in stages from the late nineteenth century, made the work lighter, but it was automation that ended it. The last manned lighthouse in Britain was switched to automatic operation in 1998, and the keepers, many of whom had served for decades, were reassigned to shore-based posts. Not everyone regarded the change as progress. Mariners' associations argued that a sensor can detect a fault but cannot notice that a distant fishing boat has failed to return. Engineers countered that remote monitoring had reduced the number of unlit beacons, which in the keepers' era were occasionally left dark for days when sickness struck. Today, several former stations have been converted into guest houses, where visitors pay to experience the isolation that the keepers once endured out of necessity.
